Information I found:
Atom Bombs
  • There are three stages
1. A massive fireball and a shock wave are both released at the same time, burning and crushing people
People would be either vaporized or be crushed under the debris left behind by the shock wave
2. Thermal radiation, or a blast of extremely hot light, is released
People standing up to three kilometers away would be burnt to death

3. Radiation is released, and also "radioactive fallout"
Radioactive fallout is when the material that was in the explosion evaporates and goes into the radioactive cloud, fusing them together. Then, the radioactive materials fall as Black Rain. Radiation also killed or permanently damaged the survivors.

Effects of a nuclear bomb blast:

Nagasaki and Hiroshima
  • On the 6th and 9th of August in 1945 America dropped 2 atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively using the Enola Gay
  • Created in the Manhattan Project
  • The two bombs’ codenames were Little Boy (dropped on Hiroshima) and Fat Man (Nagasaki)
  • Power of blast for each:

  • Fat Man: 21 kilotons
  • Little Boy: 13~18 kilotons

  • Over half of the two cities were destroyed
  • Results:

  • Hiroshima: 66,000 deaths, 69,000 casualties, 100,000 total deaths including radiation by end of 1945, 200,000 by 1950
  • Nagasaki: 74,884 deaths, 74,909 casualties, several hundred thousand deaths by radiation
  • Most of the people killed or injured were civilians
